AWStats with Plesk

For some time, I have searched the web for a clean solution to getting AWStats to work in a Plesk environment. I do not need tight integration with the control panel, or any other frills, just a working stats engine. Many opinions are given, but few solid solutions exist. Most of these “working solutions” come with a degree of difficulty, but even then many people can not produce a workable result. As I searched, I did not want to waste my time with complexity that was not likely to produce a pleasant outcome. This is when I had the idea to just KISS (Keep it simple stupid).

Many of us have heard this phrase before. We know the value of keeping it simple, yet somehow we trust in our ability to handle difficult situations more than our ability to think of a simple solution. This was what was happening to me. I was looking beyond the mark, so to put it. When I had come back to reality, I realized that getting AWStats to work as I needed did not need to be anything more than using a vhost.conf file to configure Apache for it.

I started out by installing AWStats as prescribed in the installation manual. Which ever way you do it (apt-get, rpm, tzg, etc…), it does not matter. You just need to know where on disk the installation lives. Next I needed to configure Apache to recognize AWStats as a script alias. This is where we use vhost.conf. This is the file where Plesk allows you to include your own Apache configuration. I wrote the following and placed it in my domains ‘conf’ folder (replacing <path-to>, of course):

Once I had saved my vhost.conf file , I needed to tell Plesk that this file existed. This is accomplished by issuing the following command:

/usr/local/psa/admin/sbin/websrvmng -u -vhost-name=yourdomain.com

This causes Plesk to add an include directive which points to the newly created vhost.conf configuration file.

The final thing I needed to do was disable CGI for my domain in Plesk. This allowed my included configuration to be used vs. the configuration Plesk specifies when CGI is enabled. Once you have done this, you should be able to view your stats as described in the AWStats documentation.

Naturally, these notes are very brief, as they were only meant to serve me - but this should give you some sense of where Evver Games is headed:

Ajax Solitaire

August 26th, 2007

Runs on any browser, any platform. Multiple versions of solitaire available…Very cool!

I can take a lot of hints from this guy. I love what he has done with the site. It is one of the nicest attempts at ajax card games I have evver seen.
